"Prop Cake" Dead Feminist broadside by Chandler O'Leary and Jessica Spring

Prop Cake

There is nothing complicated about ordinary equality.
— Alice Paul

We created our third broadside in response to the 2008 passage of Proposition 8, which made same-sex marriage illegal in the state of California (the law has since been ruled unconstitutional). Early 20th-century suffragist Alice Paul’s quote made the issue seem like, well, a piece of cake—so our idea was born. The colorful, multi-tiered wedding cake design is inspired by the residential architecture of San Francisco—epicenter of California’s marriage equality debate and home to a thriving LGBT community.
