"Tugboat Thea" Dead Feminist steamroller print by Chandler O'Leary and Jessica Spring

Big Thea

There are so many things left to do.
— Thea Foss

This is an “unofficial” member of our series, a large 3-foot-by-4-foot steamroller print we created at the 2009 Wayzgoose Festival in Tacoma, WA. This piece was the inspiration for our Tugboat Thea broadside.

The illustration is inspired by Thea Foss—Norwegian immigrant, business pioneer and entrepreneur. Thea founded the Foss Tugboat company in our home town of Tacoma, WA at a time in history when it was both courageous and nearly unheard of for a woman to do so. Today Foss is one of the largest tugboat companies in the world. Our broadside portrays Thea as the figurehead of her own tugboat, surrounded by crashing waves and sea life native to her home waters of Puget Sound.
